CorrView ® is a versatile maintenance tool capable of providing varying forms of corrosion related information depending upon its planned use and physical placement. Given that both the suspected corrosion rate of the piping system and the wear dimension of its forward surface will determine its ultimate service life, some preliminary thought is often necessary to determine whether long term or short term monitoring is desired. There are advantages to both options.
One important factor to consider is that different corrosion scenarios will exist for pipes or tanks depending upon their age. Therefore, the longer CorrView ® remains installed in the system, the more it will be subject to the long term effects always present, and often the most damaging effects of under deposit corrosion. At the same time, extended use will not provide the immediate corrosion information generally necessary for monitoring a water treatment program, and supplemental testing through the use of ultrasound or corrosion coupons is always recommended.
Installing CorrView ® with a higher wear dimension, provides more of a cumulative evaluation of system corrosion activity, and will better show the result of any pitting that may develop underneath deposits which have settled over a period of years.
A higher wear dimension is also more suitable where the maximum acceptable wall loss limit has already been designated, and where an alert that it has reached that point is all that is desired. Such might exist in a domestic water or fresh water line - where no chemical treatment or preventative measures can be employed.
Obviously, a higher wear dimension provides less advance notice that a corrosion problem exists. And for that reason, we recommend continuing the use of other more immediate testing methods such as ultrasound, LPR, or corrosion coupons.
CorrView ® is ideally suited for new piping installations - where it would need to sustain the first few weeks or months of higher corrosion activity which typically exists. Also, initiating a long term monitoring plan during the construction of a building property or process plant would provide future operators, many of whom might not be committed to monitoring their piping condition, a wake-up call to a corrosion problem years later. CorrView ®, installed at the time a piping system is first placed on-line, begins an independent corrosion monitoring program that future owners and operators will benefit from greatly.

CorrView ® is available having four standard wear dimensions - 0.035 in. or 0.89 mm, 0.050 in. or 1.27 mm, 0.100 in. or 2.54 mm, and 0.150 in. or 3.81 mm. The intermediate standard dimension of 0.050 in. provides an acceptable alert in most applications - especially where larger diameter and heavier pipe is used. For any typical large building or plant condenser water system, showing an alert after a wall loss of 0.050 in. would still leave substantial pipe thickness remaining.
Where corrosion activity is low, such as for a chemically treated closed chill water system, the smaller wear dimension of 0.035 in. would actually provide long term coverage, and likely offer a better testing option.
Standard wear dimensions are stock items and are generally available for immediate shipping. CorrView ®, however, can be supplied with any wear dimension or special configuration at client request.
Deposits are, in fact, a fundamental cause leading to most serious corrosion problems. A 5 MPY corrosion rate against 1,000 ft. of 12 in. pipe can actually produce thousands of pounds of deposits after one or two decades of operation. View a photo gallery of interior deposit problems.
Choosing a lower wear dimension of 0.035 in. or 0.050 in. provides more advanced notification of a corrosion problem - which might be desired by many plant operators. It may not, however, show the more damaging effects of long term deposit buildup, and the under deposit pitting which often develops after many years of service.
The lowest 0.035 in. wear dimension would be more appropriate for closed piping systems having inherently lower corrosion activity. It might also be used in combination with 0.100 in. CorrView ® models in order to provide varying levels of notice.
CorrView ® is available in stock configurations suitable for most cooling and process water applications. The features available in the stock models are listed below, as well as various options available on special order
